VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS UWG IN FRONT OF RECORD CROWD

FLORENCE – A record crowd watched the University of North Alabama volleyball team extend its winning streak to 12 matches with a 3-0 Gulf South Conference sweep over West Georgia on Tuesday. A total of 935 fans were on hand as the Lions picked up the 25-6, 25-13, 25-17 win at Flowers Hall.

The sweep gives UNA a 14-2 overall record and perfect 6-0 mark in GSC play. It also represents the longest winning streak for the program since 2006.

Natasha Fomina had a match-high 13 kills to lead the Lions on the night. Sophomore Jessica Austin added 12 kills and a .733 hitting percentage as UNA scored early and often.

North Alabama led wire to wire in the first two sets before using a late surge to pull away in the final frame. Austin set the pace in the opening set with five kills as the Lions hit .619 as a team. Fomina, a junior from Broomfield, Colo., did most of her damage in the second set with seven kills. Peyton Lang got five of her eight kills in the final set as UNA completed the sweep.

Andrea De Leon had 35 assists for the Lions while Ashtyn Kapovich recorded a match-high eight digs. West Georgia (3-8 overall, 0-6 GSC) was held to a season-low 16 kills on the night. Katie Hanson led the way with eight kills for the Wolves.

UNA will hit the road for its next two matches. The Lions will play at UAH at 7 p.m. on Oct. 1 before playing at Mississippi College two days later.
