VOLLEYBALL LIONS TOP SHORTER 3-1

FLORENCE – After dropping the opening set against Shorter, the University of North Alabama volleyball team posted three straight wins to come away with a 3-1 home victory Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The 24-26, 25-18, 25-19, 25-15 victory avenged a 3-2 loss to the Hawks earlier in the season and gives the Lions sole possession of second place in the Gulf South Conference with an 11-3 league record.

Four players reached double figures in kills as UNA improved to 21-4 on the year. Lexie Bradley led the way for the Lions. The junior was responsible for 23 points on the day, including 17 kills, three service aces and six block assists. She added a .517 hitting percentage.

North Alabama had a chance to win the opening set after grabbing a 24-23 lead. The Hawks, however, closed the set with three straight points to get the win. UNA evened the match by leading wire to wire in the second set. Bradley and Natasha Fomina had four kills each while Ashtyn Kapovich had eight digs. Shorter was held to a -.044 team hitting percentage.

The third set featured seven ties and four lead changes. A kill by Fomina broke a 15-15 tie and gave UNA the lead for good. After a 6-0 run gave the Lions a 19-15 lead, Shorter could get no closer than two the rest of the way.

UNA raced out to a 14-4 lead in the fourth set and never looked back. Peyton Lang had five kills in the frame as the Lions closed out the match.

Lang finished the match with 14 kills and tied a season-high with 19 digs. Fomina added 13 kills while Jessica Austin rounded out the top hitters with 10 kills for the Lions. Jayden Davila-McClary had 50 assists and 12 digs on the day.

Defensively, Kapovich led four players in double-figure dig totals with a match-high 23 digs. Ava Carnley turned in a career-high 17 digs while Sarah Ann Tillery finished with 10 digs.

UNA will hit the road for its next four GSC matches. The Lions will play at Christian Brothers on Friday. Match time is set for 7 p.m. on the CBU campus in Memphis, Tenn.
