LIONS SWEEP VALDOSTA STATE ON SENIOR DAY

FLORENCE – Natasha Fomina and Peyton Lang combined for 27 kills to lead the University of North Alabama volleyball team to a 3-0 home sweep against Valdosta State on Saturday. The 26-24, 25-13, 25-17 victory gives UNA a 26-5 record, equaling the team's win total from last season.

With the win, UNA clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Gulf South Conference Tournament. The Lions will host VSU again on Tuesday in first-round action. The winner will advance to the semi-final round held next weekend in Pensacola, Fla. West Florida wrapped up the top seed and right to host the final two rounds after defeating UAH on Saturday.

Against VSU, Fomina and Lang led the way in each set. The duo represented two of UNA's four seniors playing in their final regular-season match at Flowers Hall. Fomina posted a match-high 14 kills while Lang led all players with a .520 hitting percentage. Fellow seniors Sarah Ann Tillery (eight digs) and Victoria Quintanilla (six kills) also saw action on the day.

The first set was the closest of the day, featuring 17 ties and nine lead changes. Neither team led by more than two points the entire contest. The Blazers reached set points first with a 24-23 lead. The Lions, however, responded with back-to-back kills by Fomina and Lexie Bradley to go ahead 25-24. An attack error again VSU ended the game.

North Alabama overcame early leads and pulled away late in each of the final two sets. VSU hit .059 in the second set and .000 in the third while the Lions hit .419 and .231 respectively. Jayden Davila-McClary recorded 42 assists on the day while Ashtyn Kapovich led all players with 12 digs.

Susanna Peonia led Valdosta State (13-17 overall, 9-11 GSC) with eight kills.

Game time for UNA's first-round match against VSU on Tuesday will be announced Sunday. Information can be found at www.roarlions.com.
