LIONS SWEEP VALDOSTA STATE TO ADVANCE

FLORENCE – Lexie Bradley and Natasha Fomina provided a 1-2 punch for North Alabama Tuesday as the Lions knocked off Valdosta State 3-0 in the first round of the 2016 Gulf South Conference Volleyball Tournament at Flowers Hall. The pair of first team All-GSC selections combined for 26 kills as UNA improved to 27-5 on the season, surpassing its win total from a year ago.
 
The 25-16, 25-13, 25-12 victory took just over an hour as UNA advanced to the semi-final this weekend in Pensacola, Fla. UNA will face Shorter Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the UWF Field House on the campus of West Florida.
 
On Tuesday, Fomina got the Lions going early with six kills in the opening set. She finished with 12 kills and improved her team-leading total to 439 on the season. UNA took early double-digit leads in each set and began to pull away. Bradley came on strong late in the match, notching seven kills in the final frame. She finished with a match-high 14 kills.
 
UNA setter Jayden Davila-McClary picked up 41 assists while libero Ashtyn Kapovich turned in 22 digs on the night. As a team, the Lions hit .336 for the match, including a .417 showing in the second set.
 
Valdosta State (13-18) was held to a .060 hitting percentage. Tristyn Sells and Anita Rodriguez-Sanchez led the Blazers with six kills each.
