FLORENCE, Ala. – Freshman
Davis Elliott ripped an RBI-single to left with one out in the bottom of the 11
th inning as the University of North Alabama got a walk-off 5-4 win over West Georgia and took the series against the Wolves, 2-1.UNA and West Georgia split a double-header on Friday.
UNA, now 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Gulf South Conference, trailed 4-1 in the bottom of the eighth when
Conner Kiser hit a solo home run and
Kyle Hubbuch followed two batters later with a two-run shot to tie the game at 4-4.
Both teams were scoreless in the ninth and 10
th innings before UNA mounted the winning rally.
Dylan Calhoun led off the 11
th with a single and
Taylor Hayes managed to sacrifice him to second, getting the bunt down with two strikes. Elliott then singled and Calhoun narrowly beat the throw home for the win.
Blake Talley (1-1) got the win for UNA in relief of starter
Riley Sanderson. Sanderson pitched nine strong innings, allowing four runs, only three earned, on six hits with six strikeouts. Talley pitched two scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.
West Georgia took the lead with a run in the top of the first inning. The Wolves then made it 3-0 with two runs in the third on a two-run double by Garrett Hayes. The Lions got a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1 as Hubbuch doubled and scored on a Hayes RBI-single.
West Georgia got the run back in the seventh as Drew Eady singled and later scored on an error.
With two outs and no one on in the eighth, Kiser homered to make it 4-2.
Kevin Hall then singled and Hubbuch followed with his third homer of the year to tie the game.
Ethan Hunter, the third of four UWG pitchers to throw in the game, took the loss to fall to 0-1. Starter Matthew Norton went 7.2 innings and gave up three runs on 10 hits. Ryan Sapp gave up the tying homer to Hubbuch and Hunter allowed Calhoun's leadoff single in the 11
th. Joe Vonderschmidt recorded one out before giving up the game-winning hit to Elliott.
