ROME, Ga. --
Riley Sanderson pitched seven shutout innings and
Kyle Hubbuch homered twice to lead the University of North Alabama to an 8-1 win over Shorter that gave the Lions a three-game sweep of the Gulf South Conference series.
The sweep of the Hawks keeps UNA tied for the lead in the Gulf South Conference at 5-1 and the Lions improved to 10-3 overall. Shorter falls to 7-8 overall and 1-5 in the GSC.
UNA scored a run in the second inning on a solo home run by
Kyle Hubbuch and made it 4-0 in the third on a three-run homer by
Kevin Hall. Hall's home run came after single by
Kyle Crabtree and
Davis Elliott.
The Lions added two insurance runs in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh. In the fifth, Hall singled and scored on a two-run homer by Hubbuch, his fifth of the season. Hubbuch then singled in the seventh, stole second and scored on a
Conner Kiser RBI-single.
Payton Thomas walked and later scored on a ground-out by
Brandon Pugh to make it 8-0.
Sanderson pitched seven complete-innings for the Lions, allowing no runs on three hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts. He improves to 3-0 on the season and his 17th career win at UNA. Smirnoff pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Hubbuch finished three-for-five with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Hall was two-of-four with two runs scored and three RBI.
North Alabama host West Florida in a three-game GSC series beginning March 5 at Mike Lane Field.
