LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Kevin Hall homered twice and Bradley Bailey pitched five strong innings to lead the University of North Alabama to a 6-3 win in the second game of a double-header at West Alabama and helped the Lions earn a split after dropping the opener 8-6.
UNA's win in the nightcap snapped a 13-game winning streak by the Tigers.
With the split the Lions stand 15-8 overall and 8-6 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama is now 21-5 overall and 11-3 in the GSC.
UNA took a 4-1 lead in the third inning of the opener but couldn't hold it as the Tigers tied it 5-5 in the fifth and then used a three-run sixth inning to put the game away.
Taylor Hayes was three-for-four for UNA with two runs batted in and Kyle Hubbuch added a solo homer but the Lion pitchers surrendered five home runs to the Tigers.
Riley Sanderson (4-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits over six and a third innings. He walked four and struckout four. Devan Traglai gave up one run on three hits in one and two-thirds innings.
UNA took the lead early in game two and never looked back, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Dylan Calhoun got a leadoff walk and Hall hit a two-run homer. Hayes then doubled and scored on a Conner Kiser RBI-single.
The Lions made it 4-0 in the third on a Calhoun double and Hubbuch RBI-single. West Alabama got a run back in the bottom of the third but UNA made it 5-1 with a run in the sixth as Hayes walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Peyton Sockwell.
UNA's final run came in the seventh on a solo homer by Hall.
West Alabama got two runs in the bottom of the seventh but UNA held on for the win.
Bradley Bailey (2-0) got the win for the Lions, allowing just one run on two hits over five innings. He walked five and struckout three. Blake Talley pitched the final two innings, giving up two runs on two hits.
The Lions and Tigers play the final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
