LIONS DROP BASEBALL FINALE TO BLAZERS

FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama's 2016 baseball season ended Saturday with a 5-3 loss to Valdosta State in the conclusion of a suspended game from Friday and a 5-0 loss in the series finale.

UNA ended its 2016 season with a 25-22 record and a 15-17 mark in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State closed its season at 27-27 and 18-12.

VSU led UNA 5-2 in the top of the tenth inning Saturday before severe weather halted the game. The Lions managed a run in the bottom of the tenth on Saturday on back-to-back doubles by Kevin Hall and Taylor Hayes but could get no closer.

Riley Sanderson pitched eight complete innings, allowing two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision. Blake Talley (3-3)  took the loss in one and a third innings, giving up three runs on one hit. Dylan Stewart recorded the final two outs.

Hall led UNA with three hits and Hayes and Peyton Sockwell had two each.

VSU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game and added a run in the third, one in the sixth and one in the eighth. The Blazers used a combination of eight hits, two walks, a hit batter, three UNA errors, five wild pitches and a passed ball to plate the five runs.

UNA managed just seven hits and left 11 runners on base in the loss.

Todd Gibson (3-7) took the loss for UNA, pitching seven complete innings and giving up five runs on seven hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Shawn Smirnoff and Austin Carpenter each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
