SOFTBALL BLANKS VSU 8-0 TO REACH GSC TITLE GAME

FLORENCE – For the second straight season, the University of North Alabama softball team will play for a Gulf South Conference championship. UNA advanced to the GSC championship game Saturday with an 8-0 mercy-rule win over No. 21 Valdosta State.

In a battle of the top two seeds in the tournament, the Lions came out on top for the third time this season against VSU. GSC Pitcher of the Year Caitlyn Calhoun surrendered a season-high 12 hits as UNA improved to 48-5 on the season. With the loss, Valdosta State falls to 39-11-2 on the year.

Brooklynn Clark drove in two runs and Raven Cole tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Lions.

UNA used a fast start to take control. The Lions scored three runs off five hits in the bottom of the first innings. Back-to-back doubles by Courtney Shields and Reagan Tittle scored the first run of the day for the Lions. An RBI-single by Clark then made the score 2-0. Tittle reached third before a base hit to left field by Anna Gayle Norris gave UNA a 3-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth inning. Shields led off the frame with a single and later scored on Clark's hit to left field. After a walk by Harlie Barkley put runners at first and second, Madeline Lee connected on an 0-2 pitch for a three-run home run to left center.

The Lions left the potential winning run stranded at third base, but got another opportunity when the Blazers failed to score in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, Tittle doubled to right center and reached third base before an RBI-single by Norris ended the game.

Clark went 3-for-3 at the plate and added a pair defensive highlights. The senior from Seadrift, Texas, fielded a grounder in the third inning and flipped it backhanded to second baseman Lee, who was running to cover first base for the out. In the top of the sixth, VSU's Brandy Morgan fouled off a pitch down the first base line. As the ball was drifting out of play, Clark ran to the fence, reached over the railing and made the catch for the first out in the inning.

Tittle finished the contest 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Shields and Norris each posted 2-for-4 showings. Cole recorded her sixth shutout of the season to improve to 24-1.

After the game, Valdosta State eliminated West Florida 5-4 at the Florence SportsPlex to also reach the championship from the loser's bracket. The championship game is set for 10 a.m. Sunday at the UNA Softball Complex. The Blazers would have to defeat UNA twice to claim the title. Any updates on Sunday's schedule, including game time and location will be posted at www.roarlions.com.
