UNA BATS SILENT IN GAME 1 OF WORLD SERIES

DENVER, Colo. – Humboldt State pitcher Madison Williams tossed a three-hit shutout to give the No. 5 Lumberjacks a 5-0 victory over No. 3 North Alabama Friday in the opening game of the NCAA Division II National Championship Series. The two teams will play Game 2 of the best-of-three series Saturday at 1 p.m. (Central). A third game would immediately follow if necessary.

The game marked just the second time this season UNA has been shutout. The Lions (58-7) had produced 24 runs in its first three tournament games and entered the finals as the highest-scoring team in the eight-team field. On Friday, however, UNA managed only four base runners who never reached second base in the contest.

"We really didn't play UNA softball today," said head coach Ashley Cozart. "I thought we had a lot of heart. Humboldt just brought their bats and we didn't and that's going to happen sometimes. We know we are going to have to bring it tomorrow."

The Lumberjacks (54-6-1) took an early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. With a runner on third and one out, HSU scored on a fielding error to take a 1-0 lead. UNA starter Raven Cole got the next batter to ground into a double play to keep the deficit at a single run.

A three-run fourth inning extend the HSU lead. After a lead-off double, the Lumberjacks were able to string together three RBI-singles in the frame to pull away. Another lead-off double in the bottom of the sixth inning set up Humboldt State's final run. After reaching third on a ground out, Kalyn Paque scored on Sydney Roberts' sacrifice fly.

Bailey Nelson, Brooklynn Clark and Madeline Lee each singled to represent the only hits for the Lions.

Cole (25-3) took the loss in the circle. She allowed five runs off eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Williams improves to 26-3 with the win.

"They (Humboldt) got the big hits when they needed t
hem," added Cozart. "They were a very aggressive hitting team. I felt like we were not as aggressive as we have been all year."
