LIONS DOWN ASHLAND, SAGINAW TO STAY UNBEATEN

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., – After jumping out to early leads twice on Saturday, the University of North Alabama volleyball team had to hold on to win a pair of matches on the final day of the UIndy Invitational. UNA defeated Ashland 25-16, 25-17, 24-26, 18-15, 15-13 and Saginaw Valley State 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 26-24 to improve to 8-0 on the season.

Natasha Fomina had 36 kills on the day while Ashtyn Kapovich turned in 42 digs. UNA and seventh-ranked Tampa (3-0) conclude the event as the only remaining undefeated teams.

After winning the first two sets in the opener, North Alabama appeared to be on its way to a fifth consecutive sweep before the Eagles rallied. Ashland led 24-18 in the third set before six consecutive UNA points tied the game. Ashland, however, got a UNA service error, followed by a service ace of its own to get the victory.

In the fourth set, the Lions hit just .026 while Ashland led wire to wire to force a deciding game.

UNA never trailed in the fifth frame. Back-to-back kills by Victoria Quintanilla and Peyton Lang gave North Alabama and 8-6 lead and prompted a timeout by the Eagles. Ashland got to within a single point three more times but could never tie the score. A solo block by Quintanilla ended the match.

Fomina had 16 kills to lead UNA. Lang added 11 kills while Jayden Davila-McClary tossed in 45 assists. Ashland's Alli Cudworth led all players with 22 kills.

Defensively, Kapovich had a match-high 18 digs. Sarah Ann Tillery added 13 digs while Davila-McClary completed a double-double with 12 digs for the match.

Against Saginaw Valley, UNA again took command after winning the first two sets. The Lions led 18-17 in the third when Saginaw made its move. The Cardinals scored three straight points to grab a 20-18 lead and held on.

After a kill by Fomina tied the set at 20-20, Saginaw State scored five of the next six points to win the game and extend the match.

In the fourth set, Fomina and Jessica Austin had six kills each as the Lions held off another rally attempt. The Lions led 12-7 before SVSU used an 8-3 run to tie the game at 15-15. From there, the set was tied seven more times, including a 24-24 deadlock. From there, kills by Lexie Bradley and Fomina ended the match.

Fomina finished with 20 kills in the match. Lang added 14 kills while Austin and Bradley had 13 kills each. Davila-McClary finished with 59 assists.

Five different players reached double figures in digs, led by a season-high 24 from Kapovich. Lang completed a double-double performance with 14 digs while Davila-McCleary and Sarah Ann Tillery had 11 digs each. Ava Carnley rounded out the top defensive performers with 10 digs for the Lions.

UNA will now turn its attention to Gulf South Conference play. The Lions will host West Alabama Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the annual Cat-Fight promotional match.
