UNA VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS TUSKEGEE, WEST ALABAMA

FLORENCE – Jessica Austin and Lexie Bradley had 23 kills each as the University of North Alabama volleyball team picked up two wins on the final day of the UNA Volleyball Classic to improve to 10-2 on the season. The Lions defeated Tuskegee (25-11, 25-11, 25-12) and West Alabama (25-22, 25-23, 17-25, 25-18) to extend their winning streak to eight straight matches.
 
The final match against West Alabama featured the lone remaining unbeaten teams at the event. It did not count in the Gulf South Conference standings.
 
UNA took an early lead after winning the first two sets. The Tigers, however, avoided the sweep with a win in the third game. With a 2-1 lead in the match, the Lions hit .394 in the final set to clinch the win.
 
Austin had 16 kills against West Alabama. Bradley added 13 kills while Genny Cruz finished the match with 13 kills for the Lions. Jayden Davila-McClary had a double-double with 43 assists and 11 digs. Ashtyn Kapovich led all defensive players with 22 digs.
 
In the opener against Tuskegee (0-10), the Lions got a balanced offensive attack with 10 different players recording at least one kill. Bradley led the way with nine kills while Austin added seven kills in the match. Davila-McClary also flirted with a triple-double with 28 assists, 10 digs and five kills. Kapovich's 15 digs was a match-high.
 
UNA will officially open GSC play on Tuesday. The Lions are set to host Lee at 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
