LIONS GO 1-1 ON FINAL DAY OF HAMPTON INN-VITATIONAL

PENSACOLA, Fla., – The University of North Alabama volleyball team split the final day of the Hampton Inn-vitational on Saturday against a pair of teams that advanced to last year's Elite Eight round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. After knocking off No. 11 Wheeling Jesuit 3-1, the Lions lost a 3-2 thriller to South Carolina-Aiken to open the season with a 2-2 record.

In the opener, UNA dropped the opening set before rallying for three straight wins in the 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 victory. Jessica Austin and Lexie Bradley had 22 kills each while Ashtyn Kapovich turned in 23 digs.

Austin took 36 swings and finished with a .583 hitting percentage with two blocks while Bradley hit .365 for the match and had four blocks.

Freshman Christina Ellwanger rounded out the top hitters with 10 kills and just missed a double-double with nine digs on the match. Jayden Davila-McClary paced the offense with 58 assists. She added 14 digs.

Sina Faulk had 17 digs while Ava Carnley's 15 digs gave UNA four players with double digit totals.

In the nightcap, the two teams battled back and forth before the Pacers (2-2) came away with the 21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 24-26, 15-13 victory. Austin and Bradley again led the way, combining for 37 kills.

USCA, however, had four players reach double figures in kills and hit .244 as a team.

Austin finished with a match-high 20 kills. The senior added a .333 hitting percentage along with three digs, and four blocks for the match. Bradley added 17 kills while Genny Cruz reached double figures for the first time in her career with 10 kills. Davila-McClary recorded 55 assists.

Defensively, Kapovich and the Pacers' liber Rebecca Martinez each notched 31 digs. It was the second 30-plus dig showing for Kapovich, who finished the weekend with 158 digs and a 5.64 per-set average.

Faulk (21 digs) and Carnley (11 digs) rounded out the top defensive players for the Lions.

UNA will now turn its attention to next weekend's Dunn Hospitality Invitational in Evansville, Ind. The Lions will play four teams in two days on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana.
