SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of North Alabama dropped a baseball double-header at 24th ranked Point Loma, 8-2 and 5-1. With the sweep, the Lions fall to 0-3 overall while the Sea Lions improved to 3-0.
The Lions dropped the opener 8-2 Saturday, stranding 12 base runners and committing three errors that aided the Sea Lions.
Point Loma took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and pushed it to 5-0 in the third. UNA got on the scoreboard with a run in the fifth as
Kyle Hubbuch doubled,
Brandt Holland singled and
Tate Mathis drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Point Loma added a run in the bottom of the fifth to chase UNA starter
Lane Wallace. Wallace (0-1) went four and a third innings, allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout.
UNA's only other run came in the top of the seventh inning on a solo home run by
Brandt Holland.
Point Loma added two more runs in the eighth to push its advantage to 8-2.
UNA was out-hit 11 to six in the game.
Adam Mancour pitched three innings in relief for UNA, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Kaleb Barnes pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed no runs on no hits.
In the nightcap, UNA starter
Shane Priest (0-1) allowed a run in the first and a run in the third as the Lions fell behind 2-0.
North Alabama then got back-to-back doubles from
T.J. Lockett and
Davis Elliott to close the gap to 2-1 in the fifth. After a Hubbuch single gave UNA runners at first and third with one out, PLNU starter Garrett Irvin struckout UNA's
Brandt Holland and
Logan Carter to end the threat.
Point Loma got a three-run home run from Tyler Flores off UNA reliever
Channing Wall to extend the lead to 5-1 after five innings.
UNA was out-hit nine-to-seven in the loss.
Priest took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits over four innings. He struckout four. Wall pitched two innings and gave up two runs on two hits.
UNA hosts Nova Southeastern in a three-game series beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday at Mike Lane Field.
