FLORENCE, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama broke up a no-hit bid in the ninth inning and scored three runs to force extra-innings but came out on the short end of a 6-5 decision West Alabama in 10 innings at Mike Lane Field.
The Tigers led 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth before UNA plated three runs on four hit batters, an error and a single.
West Alabama then scored in the top of the 10th and retired the Lions in order in the bottom of the frame to close out the win.
With the loss, UNA is now 14-8 overall, while West Alabama improved to 8-13.
West Alabama's Cole Waites allowed two runs in the second inning on two walks and two hit batters but did not allow a hit through his seven complete innings on the mound. He struckout 14 and walked five.
The Tigers scored a single run in the fourth inning and added two more in the sixth off UNA starter
Austin Nichols. Nichols pitched five and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs on six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.
UWA added a run in the seventh off reliever
Bryant Claunch to make it 4-3 and one in the top of the ninth off
Channing Wall to make it 5-3.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Kyle Hubbuch and
Brandt Holland were both hit-by-pitch.
Ridge Watson then delivered UNA's only hit of the day, a single to left off reliever Christian Griffin. With the bases loaded and one out, a hard hit ball by
Davis Elliott went through the third baseman's legs to score two runs. With two outs,
Kevin Brenning was hit-by-pitch to reload the bases and
T.J. Lockett was hit to force in the tying run.
UWA used a leadoff walk to Jake Hartman in the 10th and an RBI-single by Dominique Dawson off UNA's
Nick Cummings to regain the lead at 6-5. Cummings (0-1) took the loss, allowing one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
Watson's single in the ninth prevented North Alabama from being no-hit for the first time since 1975.
North Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference this weekend with a three-game series at Montevallo.
