LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- A ninth inning rally gave North Alabama a 5-3 win in game one but the Lions dropped game two of a Gulf South Conference baseball double-header to West Alabama, 7-2.
With the split, North Alabama is now 20-12 overall and 11-6 in the GSC. West Alabama is 12-18 overall and 6-10 in the GSC.
The Lions and Tigers play the final game of the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Down 3-2 in the ninth inning of the opener, North Alabama scored three runs in its final at bat to take the opening game of the series 5-3.
UNA went on top 1-0 in the second inning on a
Tate Mathis solo home run. West Alabama then took the lead with two runs off UNA starter
Tyler Joyner in the fifth inning. The Lions tied the game in the top of the seventh when
Davis Elliott walked and later scored on a
T.J. Lockett RBI-single. The Tigers tied regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh and held the 3-2 advantage going to the ninth.
Mathis singled to leadoff the inning and was sacrificed to second.
Kevin Brenning walked and another RBI-single from Lockett tied the game at 3-3, with an additional run scoring on a throwing error. A
Brandt Holland RBI-single then pushed UNA's lead to 5-3.
Channing Wall came on to pitch a scoreless ninth in relief of Joyner and record his fifth save. Joyner (5-3) got the win, allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts in eight complete innings of work.
West Alabama took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
UNA tied the game with two runs in the third on a two-run double by
Ben Cooley and plated Lockett and Brenning.
The Tigers scored five runs in the fourth to take the win.
Lane Wallace (4-4) took the loss for UNA, allowing six runs on just two hits over three and two-thirds innings. He walked six and struckout four.
Josh Stillman pitched two and a third innings of relief and gave up one run on four hits.
