FLORENCE, Ala. -- North Alabama held early leads in both games but Delta State rallied to sweep a Gulf South Conference baseball double-header from the Lions, 5-2 and 11-8 at Mike Lane Field.
With the losses, North Alabama falls to 30-15 overall and 18-9 in GSC play. Delta State is now 35-7 overall and 21-4 in the GSC.
UNA's
Shane Priest pitched a no-hitter through seven innings of Saturday's opening game and UNA took a 2-0 lead with runs in the second and third innings. In the second,
Brandt Holland singled and later scored on a ground-out by
Davis Elliott. In the third,
Kevin Brenning doubled and scored on a
Kyle Hubbuch RBI-single.
DAU's Zack Shannon broke-up Priest's no-hit bid with a lead-off home run in the eighth inning. It was his 26th homer of the season. The Statesmen added two singles to chase Priest from the game and UNA's
Channing Wall recorded one out before giving up four straight hits as DSU scored four additional runs to take a 5-2 lead.
Priest (6-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits over seven innings with one walk and nine strikeouts.
In the nightcap, UNA scored a run in the second inning on a
Payton Thomas single and an RBI-single from
Ben Cooley.
DSU then scored four in the top of the third off UNA starter
Lane Wallace to take a 4-1 lead. The Lions rallied with four runs of the own in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 5-4. Holland walked and scored when
Peyton Sockwell reached on an error.
Tate Mathis also walked and scored on a wild pitch. The final two runs scored on a two-run homer by Cooley.
Delta State scored two more runs in the fourth for a 6-5 lead and got back-to-back homers to leadoff the fifth to extend it to 8-5.
UNA scored another run on a walk and a wild pitch in the fifth but the Statesmen continued to score with three more in he sixth to make it 11-6. The Lions' final two runs came in the bottom of the sixth when Mathis and Thomas drove in runs.
UNA left 10 batters on base in the game.
Wallace (6-5) took the loss for UNA. He pitched four innings and allowed seven runs, five earned, on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Bryant Claunch pitched and inning and two-thirds and allowed three runs on two hits. Wall pitched the final inning and a third and allowed a run on five hits.
North Alabama closes out its regular-season schedule next weekend with a three-game GSC series at Alabama-Huntsville.
