MERCER RALLIES FOR 3-2 WIN OVER UNA VOLLEYBALL

JACKSONVILLE – North Alabama fell just short of its first ever Division I volleyball victory on Saturday, dropping a 3-2 decision to Mercer on the final day of the Jax State Invitational. UNA won the first two sets before the Bears stormed back for the 21-25, 26-28, 25-12, 25-19, 17-15 win.

With the loss, UNA falls to 0-3 on the season and will now turn its attention to the Chattanooga Classic next weekend.

On Saturday, a service ace by Madison Ruble gave UNA the 25-21 victory in the opening set. The Lions held Mercer to a .118 hitting percentage to take the early lead.

In the second set, the Lions fought off three set points before taking a 2-0 lead in the match with the 28-26 victory. The Bears led 24-23, 25-24 and 26-25 before UNA got three straight points to take the game. A kill by Madison Ruble tied the set before the Lions took the lead on a ball handling error against Mercer. Christina Ellwanger then connected on a kill from the outside to secure the win.

Mercer was able to avoid the sweep with dominating performances in the third and fourth games. UNA hit -.079 in the third set and could never take the lead late in the fourth set.

Both teams fought off match points in the final frame. UNA led 14-12 before Mercer scored three straight points to grab a match point of its own. The Lions stayed alive on a service error before back-to-back attack errors ended the match.

North Alabama hit just .112 for the match and was plagued with errors on serves. UNA had 12 service errors and gave up 10 aces to the Bears.

Ellwanger and Sophia Brandstetter had 15 kills each to lead the Lions. Jayden Davila-McClary (25 assists, 12 digs) and Emma Ellis (17 assists, 10 digs) each had double-doubles while Genesis Benitez added 25 digs on the day.

At Chattanooga, UNA is scheduled to play Tennessee State and UNA-Asheville before closing out the event against the host Mocs.
