UNA VOLLEYBALL FALLS TWICE AT TIGER INVITATIONAL

MEMPHIS, Tenn., – The University of North Alabama volleyball team came up short against Tennessee Tech and Louisiana-Monroe Friday on the opening day of the Tiger Invitational on the campus of the University of Memphis. The 3-1 loss to TTU and 3-0 loss to ULM gives the Lions a 2-6 record on the season.
 
UNA will conclude play at the event Saturday at 1 p.m. against the host Tigers.
 
Against Tennessee Tech, Christina Ellwanger had 12 kills while Genesis Benitez recorded 17 digs to lead the Lions in the 19-25, 25-22, 20-25, 24-26 loss. Jayden Davila-McClary added a double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs.
 
Tennessee Tech used a balanced attack in the opening set with four players recording at least three kills. The Lions hit .118 as a team.
 
In the second set, it was the Golden Eagles' turn to struggle at the net. TTU hit .103 while the Lions evened the match. UNA led 24-18 before holding off a late rally to get the win.
 
UNA could not overcome a 16-10 deficit in the third set. The Lions cut the lead to two points on three different occasions down the stretch but could get no closer. After a service ace by Jayden Davila-McClary made the score 20-18 and forced a TTU timeout, the Golden Eagles responded with three straight points before getting the win.
 
North Alabama fought off two match points before falling 26-24 in the fourth set. The Lions trailed 24-22 before a TTU attack error and a block by Malaisia Stallworth and Michay Jackson tied the score. After a timeout, the Golden Eagles got back-to-back kills to end the match.
 
In the second match, Louisiana-Monroe overcame a huge deficit in the first set and used the momentum to complete the sweep in the 26-24, 25-18, 25-19 victory.
 
UNA led 14-2 and 17-3 before the Warhawks rallied in the opening set. ULM fought off two set points after a kill by Catie Ladner gave the Lions a 24-22 lead. After an attack error against UNA, the Warhawks came up with big blocks on the next two rallies, then got a kill to end the game.
 
ULM controlled the second set from start to finish. UNA was held to a .053 team hitting percentage in the frame. Both teams hit below .100 in the final game. Although the Lions held an 11-9 advantage in kills, ULM was able to pull away for the win.
 
Ellwanger finished the match with 10 kills while Davila-McClary turned in 21 assists and 11 digs. Five different UNA players reached double figures in digs, including a team-high 17 by Benitez. Paula Klemperer added 12 digs while Ladner and Emma Ellis also added 11 dig each.
