NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of North Alabama used 13 hits to score eight runs and the Lions held on in the ninth inning to down Belmont 8-4 at E.S. Rose Park.
UNA got a run in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 6-0 lead. After the Bruins scored in the bottom of the sixth, the Lions added two insurance runs in the eighth. Bemont then scored three runs in the ninth but came up short.
Peyton Thomas led UNA's offensive efforts, going three-for-three with a run scored and two runs batted in.
With the win, UNA improves to 15-33, whle Belmont is 23-24.
In the third inning, UNA's
Davis Elliott walked and then scored on a
Kevin Brenning RBI-single.
In the fourth,
Reid Homan and
Tate Mathis both singled and scored on a two-run double by
Peyton Thomas. Thomas then scored on a
Drew Hudson sacrifice fly.
North Alabama added two more runs in the fifth as
Colt Chrestman walked and scored on a
Reid Homan RBI-single. Homan then scored on a
Reid Singewald single.
In the UNA eighth, Chrestman singled and scored on a
Peyton Sockwell double. Homan then drove in the final run on a sacrifice fly.
UNA starter
Josh Stillman (3-1) pitched four innings and allowed no runs on four hits to get the win.
Garret Gillum allowed one run on one hit over two innings and
Colin Chamblin pitched two perfect innings with six up and six down.
Kaleb Barnes came on to pitch in the ninth but walked three batters, hit a batter and allowed two hits and three runs.
Keegan Foge came on to retire Belmont's Devon Gardner to end the threat and record his first save of the season.
North Alabama plays a three-game non-conference series at Arkansas-Pine Bluff beginning on Friday.
