CONWAY, Ark., – The University of North Alabama beach volleyball team came up short twice Friday in the opening day of the UCA Beach Bear Classic. After dropping a 3-2 match to Austin Peay, the Lions lost a 5-0 decision to host Central Arkansas. The two losses leave UNA with a 3-5 record on the season.

Against Austin Peay, UNA let a 2-1 lead slip away. Samantha Shafer and Genesis Benitez go the Lions on the board first with a 21-13, 11-21, 15-13 win at No. 5. After the Governors tied the score at 1-1, Mackenzie Martin and Ava Carnley rallied at No. 2 with a 19-21, 23-21, 17-15 victory.

ASPU tied the match again with a three-set win at the top spot before getting a 22-20, 21-13 win at No. 3 to clinch the match.

In the second match, Central Arkansas recorded its second 5-0 win over the Lions this season. After winning five three-set matches over UNA last weekend, the Bears needed three sets only once in the rematch.

After dropping the opening set at No. 2, Martin and Carnley extended the match with a 21-14 win. UCA, however, edged the duo 20-18 in the deciding set to complete the sweep.
