LIONS FALL TO FGCU IN ASUN TOURNAMENT OPENER

DELAND, Fla., – The University of North Alabama beach volleyball team came up short in each of the five matches against FGCU Friday in the opening round of the ASUN Conference Tournament at Stetson University. With the 5-0 loss, UNA falls to 11-9 on the season and will face Jacksonville Saturday morning in an elimination match.
 
In the opener, FGCU won the first four matches in straight sets before holding on for the final point at the No. 2 position. The Eagles (16-13) took the early lead with wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots.
 
After a victory at No. 3 clinched the win for FGCU, the remaining matches were allowed to play out. A 21-13, 21-18 victory at No. 1 increased the Eagles' lead to 4-0 before the final match of the day went to a third set.
 
Paula Klemperer and Natalie Kordt took the early lead with a 22-20 victory in the first set. FGCU's Kayla Whetstone and Kacie Johnson, however, rallied. A 21-13 win tied the match before a 15-11 victory in the third set wrapped up the scoring.
 
Jacksonville (2-19-1) lost a 5-0 decision to North Florida in the opening round. The elimination match will take place at 8 a.m. local time (7 a.m. Central) on Stetson's beach volleyball courts in DeLand, Fla.
