UNA VOLLEYBALL FALLS 3-1 IN SEASON-OPENER

WILMINGTON, N.C. – After picking up a win in the opening set, the University of North Alabama volleyball team dropped three straight games Friday in a 3-1 season-opening loss against Furman. The 25-22, 17-25, 23-25, 20-25 loss opened play at the UNC-Wilmington Invitational. UNA (0-1) will play host UNC-Wilmington and Wake Forest on Saturday.

In the opening set on Friday, UNA held the Paladins to a .027 hitting percentage before rallying for a win. After trailing 19-16, the Lions scored four straight points to take a late lead and force a Furman timeout. A 5-3 run down the stretch then clinched the victory.

Slow starts plagued the Lions in each of the next three games. Furman raced out to a 7-0 lead in the second set before holding on for the 25-17 win.

North Alabama faced another 5-0 deficit to start the third set. The Lions, however, remained within striking distance, grabbing their first lead at 17-16 on a service ace by Camy Kling. The two teams traded leads down the stretch before Furman picked up the 25-23 win.

UNA began the fourth set with a 6-1 deficit. A kill by Kling later capped a 10-4 spurt to give the Lions a brief 11-10 advantage. Furman, however, responded with three straight points and never trailed again.

UNA middles Mattrice Harris and Maggie Sullivan both hit over .300 for the match and had 10 kills each. Katy Floyd just missed a double-double with nine kills and a team-high 13 digs.

Kling paced the offense with 34 assist and 10 digs on the day. Tatum Fouche also had 10 digs for the Lions. Furman's Bella Tolone led all players with 18 kills.

UNA will play the host Seahawks at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday before facing Wake Forest at 2 p.m.
