LIONS CLOSE SEASON WITH ASUN TOURNEY LOSS AT FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla., – FGCU built a 22-point lead in the second half and held off the University of North Alabama men's basketball team for an 81-72 home win in the opening round of the ASUN Tournament Tuesday evening at Alico Arena. With the loss, UNA ends its season with a 9-21 record.
 
North Alabama led by as many as seven early in the contest. After a three-point basket by Daniel Ortiz gave the Lions an early 18-11 lead, the home team began to take control. FGCU took its first lead with 9:11 remaining in the first half when a three-pointer by Zach Anderson made the score 26-25. The lead would not change hands again.
 
The Lions stayed within striking distance throughout the first half. Damian Forrest connected on 1-of-2 free throws with 1:05 remaining to keep UNA within two points. FGCU responded with back-to-back three-pointers to take a 45-37 lead into the break.
 
The Eagles quickly pushed the lead to double digits in the second half. A basket in the paint at the 13:13 mark gave the home team its largest lead at 61-39. UNA, however, made a run of its own.
 
Deraje Agbaosi scored four points during a 9-1 spurt by the Lions. His putback made the score 64-52 midway through the second half.
 
After quick FGCU baskets pushed the lead back to 16 points, Agbaosi connected on a basket and free throw at the 8:07 mark to make the score 68-55.
 
UNA got within eight points with 3:43 left when a basket by Will Soucie cut the deficit to 65-73. The Eagles were able to answer each time. The Eagles were 12-of-23 from the floor in the second half.
 
Ortiz led all scorers with 29 points. It mark the 22nd game this season that the freshman from Shreveport, La., reached double figures and nineth game with at least 20 points. C.J. Brim added 10 points for the Lions to wrap up his playing career.
 
FGCU advanced to face Bellarmine in the second round of the ASUN Tournament. North Alabama closes out its final season in the four-year transition to the Division I level and will open the 2022-23 campaign as a full member eligible to compete in NCAA Tournaments.
