ATLANTA (October 25, 2023) – The University of North Alabama women's soccer team earned seven postseason awards from the Atlantic Sun Conference, including ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year, five All-ASUN selections and an all-freshman team selection, the league office announced on Wednesday.
North Alabama goalkeeper
Adriana Wright took home the ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year award for the 2023 season. Wright led the Atlantic Sun Conference in goals against average (0.579), shutouts (11) and ranked third in save percentage (0.847). Wright torched the record books in her first season with UNA, reaching new marks for most shutouts in a season, setting the record for consecutive scoreless minutes in UNA's Division I era twice this season and helped set the program Division I record for a consecutive unbeaten streak at eight. Wright finished the regular season ranked second in shutouts in the NCAA. The senior was also a first team All-ASUN Selection.
UNA senior
Alice Bussey joined Wright on the first team All-ASUN squad, earning All-ASUN honors for the second consecutive season. Bussey was selected to the All-ASUN third team last season and wrapped up 2023 as one of the three best forwards in the conference, as voted on by the coaches. Bussey rounded out her senior campaign with a team-leading seven goals and 17 points. Bussey also added three assists and an ASUN-leading 26 shots on goal. Bussey was nationally ranked in game-winning goals with five, good enough for the seventh-best mark in all of Division I soccer.
Graduate defender
Hannah Guthrie was the lone Lion tabbed to the All-ASUN second team. Guthrie tied for the UNA lead with four assists and was second on the team in points following career best point production in 2023. Her four assists also ranked third in the ASUN. The Gulf Shores native has contributed in all five of her seasons at North Alabama, appearing in 79 matches with 75 starts.
Briana Eads also took home honors for the Lions, as she was a third team All-ASUN selection at defender. Eads started in all 19 matches for the Lions in 2023, playing in all but 21 regular season minutes during her first season with the program. Eads was a key part of a North Alabama defense that allowed just 11 goals and 72 shots on goal this season — both marks that rank first in the conference. The defensive anchor netted her first goal as a member of the UNA soccer program earlier this season against Southern Illinois.
Freshman
Giada Aldini also picked up a pair of awards as she was a third team All-ASUN selection and was also named to the ASUN All-Freshman team. The Italian midfielder racked up four assists her freshman season, which ties Guthrie for the team lead and the third most in the ASUN. Aldini ranked second on the team with 34 shots and third with four points. Aldini is one of five North Alabama players to start all 19 matches and is the only UNA freshman to appear in all 19 regular season games this season.
North Alabama enters the ASUN Championship as a No. 4 seed and will host the first round and quarterfinals of the tournament. The Lions are set to square off with the winner of No. 8 Queens and No. 5 EKU on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex.
