CONWAY, Ark. -- North Alabama and Central Arkansas combined to score 25 runs on 32 hits in the ASUN Conference baseball series finale between the two schools, with UCA taking the 17-8 win.
The Bears took a 6-0 lead into the fifth inning but the Lions scored five runs in the frame to make it a one-run game. UCA scored three more in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-5 and UNA put three more runs on the board in the top of the sixth to make it 9-8.
Central Arkansas's four runs in the bottom of the sixth put the game out of reach for UNA and the Bears added three more in the seventh and one in the eighth.
In the fifth,
Dominick McIntyre got a leadoff single for UNA and
Andin Johnson doubled. One run scored on an
Ethan Walker ground-out and the second scored on a
Gehrig Frei RBI-single.
Kyle Machado singled and to drive in Frei and
Andrew Knight doubled to score Lane. A
Drew Hudson sacrifice fly drove in Machado with the fifth run of the inning.
In UNA's half of the sixth, Johnson doubled and scored on a two-run home run by Frei. It was Frei's first home run of the season. Machado then homered two batters later for the Lions to make it 9-8. It was his third home run.
Frei led UNA's 14-hit attack with three, while Walker, Lane Machado and Johnson had two each.
North Alabama starter
Raleigh Claunch (1-1) took the loss, allowing six runs on five hits over three innings.
UNA is now 5-13 on the season and 0-3 in the ASUN Conference.
North Alabama plays at Samford on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
