DELAND, Fla. -- Leading 3-0 and 4-3 early, the University of North Alabama baseball team couldn't hold the lead and dropped a 12-7 decision to Stetson in the second game of an ASUN Conference baseball series.
The Lions out-hit the Hatters 11-4 in the loss.
UNA, now 5-20 overall and 0-8 in the ASUN, got three runs in the top of the first and added another in the second to hold an early lead on the Hatters.
Stetson scored three runs in the first and added three in the third and six in the fifth for a 12-5 advantage after five.
In the first inning,
Ethan Walker drew a leadoff walk and scored on a
Gehrig Frei double.
Kyle Machado then hit his eam-leading seventh home run to make it 3-0.
Stetson responded with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first after two walks to tie the game at 3-3.
UNA's
Levi Jensen homered to lead off the second inning an put UNA back on top 4-3.
After the Hatters went on top 6-4, UNA got a run in the top of the fifth when
Drew Hudson singled, went to third on a
Dominick McIntyre double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jensen.
Stetson scored six runs in the fifth on just two hits but was aided by three walks and a hit batter.
UNA loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth inning on singles by Machado and
Andrew Knight, and
Jackson Ferrigno reached on an error. Hudson reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Machado. A Jensen sacrifcie fly drove in Knight to make it 12-7. A Walker infield single loaded the bases again before Stetson could finally stop the threat.
UNA starter Justin James (1-2) took the loss, allowing 10 runs on just three hits over four innings. He walked six batters and struckout two.
Caden Barnett allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning of relief and
Will Shepherd pitched three and a third shutout innings in relief.
Frei, Machado and McIntyre led UNA with two hits each.
The Lions and Hatters play the final game of the series beginning at 11:00 a.m. Sunday.
