FLORENCE, Ala. (August 10, 2023) – The University of North Alabama Men's Basketball program started the 2023-24 season with a memorable experience overseas, as the Lions spent one week in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
The men's basketball program brought a 29-person travel party that included student-athletes, coaches and support staff and participated in back-to-back games against the Dominican Republic Select Team and the Higuey All-Stars.
"This foreign tour was an incredible opportunity for our program to have a cultural experience together while growing as a program on and off the court," said UNA head coach
Tony Pujol. "We had two great on-court opportunities to play quality competition, identify areas where we can continue to improve and had a lot of fun doing it!"
The Lions won both of their games, beginning with a thrilling 106-96 win over the Dominican Republic Select Team on Friday, August 4. The DR Select Team is made up of former Division I players with professional experience in countries such as Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Spain.
The following day, UNA enjoyed a 101-69 road victory over the Higuey All-Stars — a local professional team.
The trip went well beyond the walls of a basketball arena, as the Lions were able to share many new experiences together in a foreign country. For some in the group, this trip marked their first time outside the United States.
"Off the court, our players and staff were able to spend time together in a unique setting while enjoying all the Dominican Republic had to offer," Pujol said. "We are fortunate and grateful to our athletic administrators that assisted us in making this trip a success!"
