Baseball falls to Lamar in Sunday matinee

Lions look to home opener against Belmont on Tuesday

MOBILE, Ala. (February 18, 2024) – The University of North Alabama baseball team fell to Southland foe Lamar 9-1 on Sunday in Mobile, Ala. The Cardinals were powered to victory by a six-run third inning. UNA returns home on Tuesday for its home opener against Belmont at Mike D. Lane Field.

Lamar jumped ahead early, opening the scoring in the top of the second inning via a walk, hit by pitch and a fielder's choice. In the third inning, the Cardinals would add six more runs to the lead on three hits and four walks. Justus Agosto would enter the game in the third inning to replace UNA starter Kevin Henrich

Offense for both teams was quiet until the top of the fifth inning, when Ethan Ruiz doubled down the line for Lamar. Ruiz would score two batters later after advancing to third on a ground out and scoring on a wild pitch.

Agosto would remain the UNA pitcher through the sixth inning, where his day would come to a close at 3.2 innings with one earned run, three hits and three strikeouts. Junior Quinn Petty would come in to make his 2024 debut in the seventh inning, pitching two perfect frames with two strikeouts. Petty has made 17 appearances in his North Alabama career, this being the first on the mound.

Florence native Josh Bowerman would enter the game to throw the ninth inning, allowing just one hit and one earned run in his first game of the season.

The Lions would load the bases in the home half of the ninth inning following a Leighton Jenkins hit by pitch and a pair of walks from Dominick McIntyre and Andin Johnson. Northwest Shoals Community College transfer Alex Wilson would get his team-leading fourth RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to bring home UNA's first run of the game.

Jackson Ferrigno tallied a hit for the third consecutive game to open the season, extending his reached base streak from last season to 30 games. Ferrigno has a chance to tie the Division I program record of 31 on Tuesday in Florence.
