NOTES
Weekend Recap: UNA traveled to the Bluegrass State to take on Murray State on Tuesday, Feb. 27. The Racers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first three innings before the UNA bullpen settled in and tossed five scoreless frames.
Cal Cook launched a solo home run for his first hit of the season, but the Racers would respond with a two-run to make the final 8-1.
Moving up the Ranks: With a six-strikeout performance against Morehead State on Saturday,
Jacob James moved into fifth place all-time in career strikeouts at UNA with 195. The southpaw from Loretto, Tenn. sits 12 strikeouts away from tying recent UNA Hall of Fame inductee Trey Mitchell for fourth place and is just 16 strikeouts away from having sole possession of second place.
Let Him Cook: North Alabama first baseman
Cal Cook launched a solo home run for his first hit of the season on Tuesday at Murray State. In two starts, Cook has a .500 on base percentage with an .800 slugging percentage. The home run also served as UNA's fourth homer in the last two games and six in eight games this season.
Don't Call it a Comeback: North Alabama right-handed pitcher
Brycen Parrish has made three appearances so far in 2024 after missing a majority of the 2022 and 2023 seasons due to injury. The senior from Florence, Ala. has turned in a 2.25 ERA with 13 strikeouts in eight innings on the bump.
A First for Everything: UNA had four pitchers make their 2024 debut on Tuesday at Murray State in
John Allen Stogner,
David Burton,
Bryce Richter and
Raleigh Claunch. Transfers Stogner and Burton both made their North Alabama debut and tabbed their first career strikeouts at UNA on Tuesday.
Series History: The two schools have met just twice since UNA began keeping full season records in 1984. The Lions toppled the Blazers in Birmingham while the Blazers returned the favor, defeating UNA in Florence, both matches in 1985. The two teams met four times prior to full season records with UAB winning three of the four.
Scouting the Blazers: UAB enters the weekend with a 3-5 record. The Blazers opened up the season with a series victory over ASUN foe Kennesaw State before dropping a series to Southeastern Louisiana in Birmingham. The two midweeks for UAB have come against in-state SEC opponents Auburn and Alabama. UAB lost 9-7 to Alabama on Tuesday in 10 innings.
