FLORENCE, Ala. (March 17, 2024) – The University of North Alabama baseball team picked up their first conference victory of the season with a 4-2 win over Kennesaw State on Sunday at Toyota Field in Madison, Ala. A dominant pitching staff alongside a go-ahead two-run home run courtesy of redshirt junior
Andin Johnson lifted the Lions to victory.
The Lions improve to 7-12 on the season and 1-2 in ASUN play, while the Owls fall to 11-9 and 2-1.
In a tie game, Johnson stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning and launched a two-run shot to the left field porch to give North Alabama a 4-2 advantage over Kennesaw State late in the game.
Dane Sykes tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing zero hits or runs while striking out four batters on his way to his first victory of the season. Sykes entered the game in the seventh with the go-ahead runner on second base and just one out before earning a groundout and a strikeout to escape the jam.
After a pair of scoreless frames, UNA jumped out to an early lead in the third inning following a hit by pitch and back-to-back singles from Jackson Ferrigno and Jonathan Lane.
The Lions wasted no time adding to the lead, as Dominick McIntyre doubled into the right center field gap to bring home Andrew Knight and extend the advantage to 2-0 after four innings.
Kennesaw State answered in the fifth and the seventh inning with an RBI single scoring one in the fifth before a game-tying ground rule double from Hudson Mimbs knotted the teams square at 2-2.
UNA starter Anthony Pingeton's day ended after 6.1 innings, five hits, two runs and one walk. The right-hander tabbed four strikeouts in his longest outing of the season and exited a tie game.
Cal Cook reached base on a throwing error by the KSU catcher and advanced to second before coming around to score on Johnson's first home run of the season.
Ferrigno wrapped up his day at the plate going 3-for-4 with a trio of singles.
