Baseball edged by EKU in back and forth battle

Colonels use seventh inning homer to take down UNA

RICHMOND, Ky. (March 23, 2024) – The University of North Alabama baseball team battled with EKU on Saturday, but eventually fell 6-5 in Richmond, Ky. UNA and EKU were tied moving to the home half of the seventh inning before the Colonels launched a go-ahead solo home run to take the lead.
 
The Lions fall to 8-14 on the season, while the Colonels improve to 6-18. UNA is now 1-4 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
 
North Alabama entered the seventh inning down 5-3 before a rally capped off by a Gehrig Frei RBI single tied the game at 5-5. The Lions punched out the leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh before EKU clean-up hitter Max Williams launched a solo home run to give the Colonels a 6-5 lead. 
 
Jacob Bradshaw took the bump for the Lions in game two and tallied two quick strikeouts in his first frame. However, EKU picked up an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of infield singles. 
 
Dominick McIntyre and Zak Majer each notched singles in the top of the second before a Levi Jensen walk loaded the bases. Leighton Jenkins singled to right center field to bring home McIntyre and Majer, tying the game at two.
 
After a scoreless third inning, Jenkins picked up his third RBI of the game on a groundout to give the Lions the 3-2 lead midway through the fourth. EKU answered, picking up a trio of runs on four singles and an error. 
 
Bradshaw tossed another scoreless innings before giving way to Brycen Parrish out of the bullpen in the sixth. Bradshaw's day ended after 5.0 innings, four earned runs and five strikeouts. 
 
Jensen walked to lead off the seventh before Andrew Knight singled to put runners at the corners with one out. Jonathan Lane reached on an error to bring home a run before Frei tied the game on a single to right field. 
 
After a strikeout to begin the inning, EKU launched a home run to right field for the 6-5 lead. Garrett Langrell entered the game in the ninth for the Colonels and picked up his first save of the season. 
 
Eight Lions tallied hits on the game, including three individuals who had multi-hit performances. Knight and Frei each went 2-for-5, while Majer enjoyed a 2-for-3 outing with a pair of runs.
