Baseball drops series to Lipscomb

Lions look ahead to midweek with Alabama A&M on Tuesday

FLORENCE, Ala. (March 30, 2024) – The University of North Alabama baseball lost the series deciding game to Lipscomb on Saturday in Florence, 15-2. After UNA picked up a win on Friday to even the series at one game apiece, Lipscomb tallied five home runs to take two of three in the series.

The Lions fall to 9-17 on the season, while the Bisons improve to 7-19. Both teams entered the day 2-6 in Atlantic Sun Conference play, as Lipscomb wins its first ASUN series of the season.

Down 12 runs moving into the bottom of the fifth, North Alabama looked to pinch hitter Bryant Loving for a spark. The freshman picked up a single in his first plate appearance of the day, making way for UNA left fielder Andrew Knight to launch his third home run of the season to put North Alabama on the board. This string of events broke up a perfect game for Lipscomb starter Jake Poindexter.

Andin Johnson notched a single, while Leighton Jenkins lined one to right field to put two runners on with two outs. A flyout ended the frame, cutting UNA's comeback attempt short.

Lipscomb jumped out to an early lead over the Lions, picking up three home runs in the first two innings to go up 5-0 after two frames. The Bisons wasted no time adding to the lead, picking up seven more runs, bringing the lead to 12-0 after five trips around the lineup.

After the two runs in the fifth, Kyle Machado singled to right-centerfield in the sixth, but the Lions could not capitalize on the one out baserunner. The Bisons picked up home run number five in the seventh to extend the lead to 15-2.

Jenkins is now 3-for-6 with a double and three RBIs across his last two games, while picking up at least one hit in five of his last six games.
