Late surge not enough to help Lions over Racers

North Alabama looks ahead to UT Martin for weekend series

FLORENCE, Ala. (March 7, 2024) – The UNA baseball team fell 11-6 to Murray State on Thursday at Mike D. Lane field. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 6 before being moved to Thursday due to field conditions following rain.

The Lions fall to 3-9 on the season, while the Racers improve to 8-5.

Down late in the contest, North Alabama strung together five runs in the final four innings, but the late comeback attempt was not enough to overcome the Murray State offense. The Lions loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and pushed two runners across before using a groundout and a two-run homer to add three more in the eighth.

Murray State would answer, however, adding seven runs of their own across those same four innings. The Racers tallied three homers on the game to power them past UNA 11-6.

Murray State didn't waste much time getting on the board, opening the contest with a single and a two-run shot to right center field to get up 2-0. They added a run in each of the following two innings with an RBI double and a groundout to make it 4-0 after three.

North Alabama got on the board in the fourth inning thanks to a Jonathan Lane solo shot – his second on the season. Josh Bowerman entered the game in the fifth and tossed a scoreless frame to keep the score at 4-1 after five innings.

Murray State quickly responded in the sixth, loading the bases before pushing four runs across to extend the lead to seven.

North Alabama took to the home half and added two runs thanks to a Gehrig Frei RBI groundout and a bases loaded Dominick McIntyre walk.

The Lions began a comeback attempt with a Jonathan Lane leadoff single and a one out double from Andrew Knight. Frei brought home his second run of the game with a groundout, bringing home Lane to score. In the next at bat, McIntyre launched one over the left field wall to cut the Racer lead to four. A strikeout ended the inning and Murray State tacked on another run in the top of the ninth to leave the final score at 11-6.
