Baseball comes up short in midweek contest with Belmont

Johnson tallies two home runs in midweek contest

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 16, 2024) – The University of North Alabama baseball team tacked on nine runs on Tuesday against Belmont, but fell short 15-9 to the Bruins in Nashville. The Lions have now scored 57 runs in the last four games after scoring 56 in the previous 13 games.

The Lions fall to 13-21 on the season, while the Knights improve to 20-17.

North Alabama mashed three home runs in Tuesday's game, including a seventh inning Gehrig Frei home run that cut the Bruin lead to 10-7, but a four-run home half from Belmont added enough insurance for the home team.

UNA picked up the opening run of the afternoon courtesy of a first inning Kyle Machado single. After Belmont responded in the second inning to tie the game, the Lions pushed across a second run to make it 2-1 in the top of the third.

The Bruins tacked on six runs over the next two innings, sending UNA to bat in the top of the fifth down 7-2.

Andin Johnson unloaded on a pitch to pick up his second home run in as many games. Johnson's longball cut into the Belmont lead as Andrew Knight rocked a two-run triple to the right field gap just an inning later. Just as UNA cut the Belmont lead back to 7-5, the Bruins added on three more in the bottom of the sixth.

A two-run homer from Frei — the reigning ASUN Player of the Week — made another dent in Belmont's lead in the seventh, but the Bruins responded once again with four runs in the home half.

Johnson homered for the second time in the game and the fourth time on the season in the eighth inning. The North Alabama catcher picked up his third RBI of the night on a single up the middle in the ninth.

Frei and Johnson combined to go 6-for-10 with three home runs and five RBI's.

North Alabama right-handed pitcher Josh Bowerman tossed a scoreless fifth inning and notched a strikeout. The Florence native picked up his fourth scoreless outing of the season.

UNA has now tallied 57 runs in the last four games after having just 56 in the prior 13 contests. With the nine run offensive showing, the Lions have now scored nine or more runs in 11 games this season.
