FLORENCE, Ala. (April 27, 2024) – The University of North Alabama baseball team started strong, but fell 14-4 in game two of the series with Central Arkansas on Saturday.
Andrew Knight launched his seventh home run of the season in the first inning before the UCA offense charged back into the game.
The Lions fall to 14-26 on the season, while the Bears Improve to 19-22. UNA falls to 6-14 in ASUN Conference play as Central Arkansas moves to 9-11 in the ASUN.
After escaping a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning, North Alabama put two runners on base with two outs in the home half.
Gehrig Frei was hit by a pitch just before
Levi Jensen walked, bringing Knight to the plate. The UNA left fielder launched a three-run homer to left field for his seventh of the season and an early North Alabama lead.
UCA wasted no time to respond, loading the bases for A.J. Mendolia, who sent one to the right-center field gap to bring home all three runners and tie the game at 3-3.
North Alabama starting pitcher
Jacob Bradshaw tossed a scoreless third inning while picking up a strikeout. Bradshaw finished his outing with four strikeouts across 4.2 innings, one strikeout away from tying his season high.
Central Arkansas took the lead in the fourth inning and added another run in the fifth. The Bears extended the lead with a five-run sixth inning, capped off by a Preston Curtis grand slam over the left field fence.
Leighton Jenkins dug into the UCA lead in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run. It is the second homer of the season for the North Alabama shortstop and the second of the game for the Lions. The Bears launched a two-run home run in the eighth inning, before adding another two more runs in the inning, pushing the lead out to 14-4.
Carson Howard made his 13th appearance of the season and tossed 2.0 scoreless frames, allowing just one baserunner. It is his fourth scoreless outing of the season.
