ATLANTA (May 20, 2024) – The Atlantic Sun Conference announced Monday that University of North Alabama third baseman
Gehrig Frei was named to the Academic All-ASUN Team as one of 13 members to receive honors.
The team is voted on by the league's sports information directors and academic representatives. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a cumulative 3.50 GPA or higher, participate in 50 percent or more games, have completed four semesters of coursework and must have one year of residence at the institution.
The redshirt sophomore led UNA in almost every offensive category in 2024, including batting average, runs, hits, home runs and RBIs. His 15 home runs are the most in a season since UNA Athletic Hall of Famer Josh Willingham hit 15 in 1999 and is tied for the third most in a single season in program history. The Alpharetta, Ga. native set new Division I program records for home runs (15), runs (51), RBIs (49) and total bases (123) in a season. Frei is majoring in exercise science.
Frei earned ASUN All-Freshman team honors last season and he is the fifth Lion to be selected to an Academic All-ASUN team.
The remainder of the ASUN postseason awards will be announced at 3 p.m. today.
