BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (May 7, 2024) – The University of North Alabama baseball team led early, but ultimately fell to Samford 12-3 in Tuesday's midweek contest in Birmingham. The Lions return to Florence to take on North Florida in the final series at Mike D. Lane Field this weekend.
The Lions fall to 16-31 on the season, while Samford improves to 32-16.
In the top of the third inning,
Dominick McIntyre launched his sixth home run of the season in solo fashion as UNA took a 1-0 lead. Samford tacked on eight runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back.
John Allen Stogner tossed two scoreless frames, facing the minimum six batters before the third inning Bulldog rally. Stogner picked up a strikeout in his two innings of work.
McIntyre's solo shot is his sixth of the season — the third most on the team. The UNA senior trails just
Gehrig Frei (15) and
Andrew Knight (8) for the most on the squad.
Leighton Jenkins jumped on a pitch for a one-out double in the fifth inning before Frei walked to put two runners on with two outs.
Kyle Machado stepped to the plate and doubled to the right-center field gap to bring home both runners and cut into the Samford lead.
Samford responded in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own before adding on a pair in the eighth inning to extend the lead.
Machado and Jenkins each tallied two hits on Tuesday, matching one another with a double and a single each.
Justin Battle and
Raleigh Claunch both turned in scoreless outings, combining for 1.2 innings with zero hits allowed. Battle struck out two Samford batters in his 13th appearance of the season.
