APEX, N.C. (September 16, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team had an unfortunate end to a promising season opener on Monday, as the Wolfpack Invitational hosted by NC State was canceled during the first round due to weather.
Before the cancelation, the Lions were leading as the tournament was called due to the heavy rain. There were 13 teams in the tournament — all Division I competitors.
North Alabama held a two-stroke lead over the second place Rhode Island team. Senior
Chase Kaiser, who was participating as an individual, was in a five-way tie for first at one-under-par. Junior transfer
Blake Henriques and returning junior
Eric Luo were tied for the sixth spot after the initial five-way tie.
The Lions also led tournament host NC State, as well as Campbell, Longwood, Temple, USC Upstate, ASUN members Queens, Jacksonville and Bellarmine, Florida A&M, NC Central and NC A&T.
The Club of 12 Oaks took on heavy water during the tournament with the expectation of nearly three more inches of rain.
UNA gets back to the state of Alabama in the next tournament. The GMAC Invitational is held in Oneonta, Ala. and hosted by the UAB Blazers starting Sunday, Sept. 22 at Limestone Springs Golf Club. The Lions competed in this tournament a season ago with a top-half finish. This will be the second tournament of the season and the second of two Alabama-based tournaments.
