CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (April 26, 2025) – The University of North Alabama baseball team had a hard-fought battle with Austin Peay on Saturday in Clarksville, but fell in the final at-bat, 6-5. The Govs scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the ninth.
The Lions (15-25, 10-10 ASUN) had two home runs on the day while limiting Austin Peay (33-10, 17-3 ASUN) to none — only the seventh time this has happened to APSU in 43 games played.
North Alabama threw three pitchers as Anthony Pingeton started on the mound. Gavin Oswald came in for relief for two innings of work, while Luke Davenport finished out the final 1.2 innings of the game. UNA had nine strikeouts for the three pitchers, while Davenport had four in the 11 batters he faced.
The Lions had eight hits for the afternoon with six walks and four RBIs. Six different batters earned a hit while Matthew Delgado and Alex Wilson had two apiece for the game. Austin Peay opened the game as the Govs typically have done in these games, scoring a pair of early runs. Pingeton then threw three scoreless innings to allow his offense to work back into it. Delgado and Rippen paired together to hit two home runs in the top of the fourth to secure a 3-2 lead and score the initial runs of this road series for UNA.
North Alabama added another run in the top of the fifth as Alex Wilson scored from third as Delgado reached on a throwing error by third base. However, the Governors answered to tie the game up as a couple of singles scored two runners that were on in the bottom of the fifth.
Rippen reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth and Leighton Jenkins got to first from a shortstop throwing error. Wilson singled to left center to score Rippen and take the 5-4 lead.
Austin Peay added a run in the eighth to tie the game.
Ryker Billingsley, Petey Craska and Delgado all singled in the top of the ninth to load the bases. Ryan West pinch hit and grounded into a double play before the final Lion grounded out to leave runners stranded.
