FLORENCE, Ala. (May 2, 2025) – The University of North Alabama baseball team fell to Lipscomb in game two of a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series at Mike D. Lane Field at Bank Independent Stadium, 7-6.
The Lions (16-28, 10-13 ASUN) hit .308 with two outs and hit .333 with runners on the base path. Five different batters recorded a hit for North Alabama, including
Matthew Delgado with multiple hits.
Despite a late UNA lead, the Bisons (22-23, 15-8 ASUN) used a three-run home run in the top of the ninth to take the lead and eventually win.
UNA used two pitchers for the game with
Anthony Pingeton starting for the Saturday game. The senior went five innings with four strikeouts in 25 batters faced.
Luke Davenport finished out the game with four innings of work while striking out four of the 16 batters that stepped into the box against him.
North Alabama used a three-run third inning to take the lead, 3-2.
RJ Sherwood hit a two-run bomb that hit the net over the purple monster – name pending – to score himself and
Leighton Jenkins.
Jenkins added two RBIs himself as the Lions totaled six for the game. All six runs came from a different runner in the afternoon battle.
The Bisons answered as a single and double put runners in scoring position. A hit batter loaded the bases, and a single scored one. A wild pitch scored another.
Pingeton worked back the inning. He got the next batter to line out as captain
Jonathan Lane established a new vertical as he squeezed it between the fingers for the out.
To continue with Lane, he got the grounder at second. He touched his bag and then sent it to
Petey Craska at first for a double play to get his pitcher out of a tight spot.
Delgado and
Wes Walker singled in the bottom of the fourth. Lane moved them around with a ground out to second. Loving then sent a line drive up the middle to score Delgado for the tie.
The bottom of the sixth saw more from the Lions.
Ryan West walked and then Lane. Loving was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.
The Bisons elected to change pitchers.
Jenkins then walked to score West to break the stalemate. A couple of Lions struck out but Craska walked to add another run to make it, 6-4.
As Davenport continued in the eighth, he punched out two swinging strikeouts to hold the lead.
The two runners had a double steal and made it safely as the current at-bat went to a full count. Lipscomb cleared the bases with a home run and to win, 7-6.
