VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO VSU IN GSC TITLE MATCH

Box Score ROME, Ga., – Valdosta State claimed its first-ever Gulf South Conference volleyball title Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep over North Alabama in championship match. The Blazers (24-7) hit .283 as a team with 9.5 total blocks in the 25-22, 29-27, 25-19 victory, earning the GSC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

With the loss, UNA falls to 20-12 on the year and will wait to see if it is selected.

In the title game, North Alabama struggled at the net, hitting .187 for the match. The Blazers were able to take the early lead with a run midway through the opening set. With the score tied at 8-8, VSU used an 8-3 run to grab a 16-11 lead and prompt both UNA timeouts during the stretch. The Lions would get no closer than two the rest of the way.

The Lions had their best chance to get a win in the second set. Trailing 20-13, UNA began a ferocious rally. VSU reached set point at 24-22 before a service error on the Blazers and a kill by Andrea De Leon tied the game. The Lions fought of two more set points before back-to-back kills by Megan Wadsworth gave UNA a set point of its own at 27-26. Valdosta State, however, responded with three straight points to get the win, scoring the final point on a service ace to take a 2-0 overall lead in the match.

In the final set, VSU again used a late spurt to get the win. With the score tied at 11-11, the Blazers used a 9-4 run to take a 20-15 lead. UNA would never recover.

Jessica Austin hit .440 for the match and led North Alabama with 13 kills. Wadsworth added 12 kills and hit .458 for the Lions. De Leon finished with 39 assists and 11 digs while Ashtyn Kapovich recorded 13 digs for UNA.

Valdosta State was led by Lea Jaklen's 11 kills, three blocks and 14 digs. Jenna Kirkwood added 10 kills and three blocks and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. VSU setter Jessica Codato also received all-tournament honors after netting seven kills and 38 assists in the title game.

De Leon, a junior, was also selected to the all-tournament team. She was joined on the team by a trio of UNA freshman, including Wadsworth, Austin and Lexie Bradley.
