LIVINGSTON – The University of North Alabama volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 3-0 sweep at West Alabama Tuesday evening. The 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 victory gives UNA an 18-11 overall record and 14-6 mark in Gulf South Conference play. With other GSC team still playing throughout the week, the Lions are assured no lower than a fourth-place finish.
Megan Gorey posted 11 kills to lead all players in the match. Jessica Austin and Natasha Fomina added eight kill each as the Lions hit .231 as a team. Setter Andrea De Leon finished with 33 assists on the night while Ashtyn Kapovich notched 11 digs to lead UNA.
West Alabama (9-19 overall, 7-11 GSC) was led by Yanesha Johnson's 10 kills. Needing two wins to keep their post-season hope alive, the Tigers will close out the regular season with road matches at UAH and Valdosta State.
UNA will open play in the 2014 Gulf South Conference Tournament next week. With no chance to reach either of the top two seeds, the Lions will host an opening-round game on Nov. 11. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Flowers Hall. The semi-finals and final will be held on the campus of top-seeded Shorter University Nov. 15-16 in Rome, Ga.
