SOFTBALL LIONS DOWN CBU 10-1, 10-2 TO COMPLETE SWEEP

FLORENCE – Two home wins against Christian Brothers on Sunday gave the University of North Alabama softball team a three-game Gulf South Conference sweep against the Bucs. The Lions won 10-1 and 10-2 to improve to 19-4 overall and 8-3 in GSC play.

Both games ended in walk-off fashion via the eight-run mercy rule. Briana Caldwell's three-run home run provided the winning margin in the bottom of the fifth inning of the opener. In the second game, an RBI-single by Ashton Edwards scored Caldwell from second base in the bottom of the sixth to end the contest.

For the day, the UNA bats came alive for 20 runs off 26 hits. The Lion pitching staff also limited CBU (4-18 overall, 2-10 GSC) to just three runs on five hits.

Christian Brothers scored its lone run of the first game in the top of the first inning. An RBI-single by Kilie Stegall gave the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead. CBU would not get a hit the rest of the game.

UNA starter Bree Blevins pitched the next four innings without yielding a hit or a run. She struck out four batters and improved to 8-2 on the season.

Offensively, North Alabama plated single runs in the bottom of the second, third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead. In the fifth, the Lions scored seven runs off six hits to end the game. RBI-singles by Brittany Gillison and Ashley Bonner made the score 5-1 before a two-run single by Bailey Nelson made it 7-1 and put runners on first and second for Caldwell.

The freshman from Athens connected on a 2-2 pitch and sent it over the centerfield fence to give the Lions to walk-off victory.

Bonner finished the game 3-for-3 with two doubles. Caldwell, Gillison and Libby Olinger each posted a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.

In the second game, Edwards was 4-for-4, including the game-winning hit. The freshman from Pulaski, Tenn., also recorded the complete-game pitching victory, scattering four hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the year.

After the Lions plated single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings, CBU responded with runs in the top of the third and fourth frames to tie the game at 2-2. After Edwards led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, Hannah Harris took over base-running duties and later scored on an RBI-single by Nelson. UNA held the 3-2 lead until a seven-run sixth inning ended the game.

Edwards got the first and last hit of the frame, leading off the inning with a single and providing the walk-off hit to end the contest. UNA got seven of its 15 hits in the sixth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate.

Olinger also drove in two runs and was 3-for-4 in the nightcap. Nelson and Gillison added two hits each.

UNA will host Montevallo in a non-conference double-header on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at the UNA Softball Complex at Cox Creek Park.
