SOFTBALL TEAM SWEEPS NO. 6 VALDOSTA STATE

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team got a no-hitter in the first game and timely hitting in the second during a Gulf South Conference sweep over No. 6 Valdosta State on Friday. The 1-0 and 4-2 victories give the Lions a 13-1 overall record, including a 2-0 start to league play.

Hillary Carpenter tossed the complete-game shutout without yielding a hit in the opener. She walked three and struck out four in the pitcher's duel. Valdosta State's Caitlyn Calhoun also took a scoreless game into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Bailey Nelson led off the sixth with a single and was sacrificed to second by Courtney Shields. After an infield hit by Reagan Tittle put runners at the corners, Brooklynn Clark's RBI-single up the middle scored the game's only run.

Carpenter (5-0) retired three straight in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Several key defensive plays kept Carpenter's no-hitter intact. After a one-out walk in the top of the fourth inning, the Lions turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat. VSU's Hayley Cruthers also hit a fly ball deep to left center in the top of the seventh inning. Nelson's catch at the warning track, however, kept the tying run at the plate.

UNA finished with five hits, including a 2-for-3 showing from Clark. Calhoun, the reigning GSC Pitcher of the Year, suffered her first loss of the season, falling to 4-1.

In the second game, North Alabama overcame an early 1-0 deficit after the Blazers' Jaime Phillips hit a solo homerun to lead off the game. UNA Starter Raven Cole settled down to scatter just five more hits the rest of the way to get the pitching victory.

The Lions quickly answered in the bottom of the first with a solo homer by Tittle to tie the game. A two-run third inning then gave UNA the lead for good. Back-to-back singles put runners at first and third for Tittle, who drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Clark then drove in her second run of the day with a single up the middle.

Harlie Barkley led off the fourth inning with a walk and later scored on a RBI-double by Mackenzie Roberts to give the Lions a 4-1 lead. Roberts added another double later in the game and finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Clark was also 2-for-3 for a second straight game.

Valdosta State (6-3) added a run in the top of the seventh and had the tying run on base before Cole recorded a fly out to end the game. She finished the game with six hits and two strikeouts to improve to 7-1 on the year. VSU left nine runners on base.

The Blazers had a chance to score in the top of the fifth, getting a base hit with a runner at second. Nelson, however, fielded the ball in left field and threw out the runner at the plate.

The two teams will conclude the three-game series on Saturday with a single-game scheduled for 1 p.m.
