LIONS COMPLETE SWEEP OVER DELTA STATE

FLORENCE - Reagan Tittle homered twice and the University of North Alabama softball team produced another double-digit hit total as the Lions defeated Delta State 8-5 to cap a three-game sweep. The win gives UNA a 35-4 record on the season and a 19-2 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

The victory also extends the team's school-record winning streak to 18 straight games. UNA owns a three-game lead over UAH and Delta State in the conference standings.

After DSU scored a single run in the top of the first inning, Tittle got the Lions going in the bottom of the frame with a two-out solo shot to centerfield. The blast was her seventh homer of the season and extended her hitting streak to 13 consecutive games.

With the score tied at 1-1, Harlie Barkley led off the second inning with a single. She later scored on another two-out hit by Mackenzie Roberts to give UNA a 2-1 lead. The Lady Statesmen responded with a run in the top of the third and the game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning.

North Alabama used another two-out hit to take the lead for good in the fifth. A double down the leftfield line by Barkley scored Tittle to make the score 3-2. Barkley then scored on an RBI-single by Anna Gayle Norris to give the Lions a 4-2 lead.

After DSU added a run in the top of the sixth, the Lions plated four runs in the bottom of the inning. Danielle Cruickshank led off the frame with a solo shot to left center. After a single by Bailey Nelson, Tittle connected on her second homerun to make the score 7-2. Barkley then singled and stole second base. She scored on another RBI-single by Norris to account for the last UNA runs.

Delta State was able to score twice and get two more runners on base in the top of the seventh. Hillary Carpenter came on in relief and tossed one pitch to record the save. Starter Raven Cole worked 6.2 innings to get the victory. She scattered five hits and struck out seven to improve to 17-1 on the season. The save was the second of the year for Carpenter.

At the plate, Barkley was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Norris drove in two runs and finished 2-for-3. Tittle, Nelson and Courtney Shields also each had two hits on the day.

UNA will take its winning streak to Huntsville next weekend for another key GSC series at UAH. The two teams will play a double-header on April 2 at 2 p.m., followed by a single game at the same time the following day.
