SOFTBALL LIONS FINISH SWEEP TO REACH 40 WINS

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team continued its assault on the school record books on Sunday. A 6-2 home victory over Mississippi College gave the Lions a 40-5 record on the year, tying the record for most victories in a season. Brooklynn Clark also became the program's all-time leader in RBI as UNA maintained first place in the Gulf South Conference with a 24-3 league record.

With six conference games remaining, UNA has a three-game lead, as well as the tie-breaking advantage over second-place Delta State. The winner of the GSC regular season will host the 2016 conference tournament April 28-May 1.

Against Mississippi College, the Lions had to rally for the victory in the series finale. The Lions trailed 1-0 and had just two hits heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Harlie Barkley started the rally with a lead-off single. She reached third before Mackenzie Roberts tied the game with an RBI-single to center field. UNA pushed four more runs across the plate in the inning to take a 5-1 lead.

Shelby Woodard followed Roberts' hit with a three-run home run to left field. It was the second pinch-hit, three-run homer of the series for the freshman from Mt. Juliet, Tenn. Bailey Nelson wrapped up the scoring in the inning. She doubled and reached third before scoring on a wild pitch.

Clark led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run to left center. The shot gave her 53 RBI on the year, passing Jessica Liddy and Lindsey Bates, who each drove in 52 runs during the 2006 season.

The Choctaws added a run in the top of the seventh inning but could get no closer. Raven Cole picked up the pitching victory to improve to 21-1 and pull within a single win of tying a school record for victories in a season. She scattered seven hits and struck out five in seven innings of work.

Nelson and Barkley each finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

With Thursday's double-header at Tuskegee cancelled, the Lions are set to return to GSC play next weekend at home against Union. The two teams will play a double-header Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a single game at 1 p.m. the next day.
