UNA SOFTBALL SWEEPS UNION, CLINCHES GSC

FLORENCE – A dominating performance by the University of North Alabama softball team resulted in the Lions clinching their first Gulf South Conference regular-season championship in 30 years. UNA outscored Union 20-0 in two games, getting an 11-0, 9-0 sweep with a pair of mercy-rule victories. The two wins, along with Delta State's loss to West Florida on the same day clinched first place for UNA and the right to host the upcoming GSC Tournament.

The UNA pitching staff tossed a pair of shutouts, including a no-hitter by Raven Cole in the second game. The offense also exploded with seven home runs, including three from Brooklynn Clark. The senior from Seadrift, Texas finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate with seven RBI.

As a team, UNA (42-5 overall, 26-3 GSC) now has 60 homeruns on the season, one shy of the single-season school record of 61 set during the 2014 campaign.

In the opener, UNA scored 11 runs off 13 hits. The Lions hit two homers in the bottom of the first inning to get things going. A solo shot by Courtney Shields and an RBI-single by Harlie Barkley gave the Lions a 2-0 lead. Anna Gayle Norris then connected on a two-run blast to dead center to make the score 4-0.

A four-run second inning put the game out of reach early. Peyton DeLong singled and later scored on an error to give the Lions a five-run lead. Clark then hit her first homer of the day. The three-run shot to left center gave UNA an 8-0 advantage. RBI-singles by Shields and Bailey Nelson in the third inning and a solo home run by Barkley in the fourth wrapped up the scoring in the first game.

Hillary Carpenter took a perfect game into the top of the fifth inning before Union used a pair of hits to reach base. Carpenter, however, retired the side to secure the victory and improve to 19-3 on the year. She finished the game with six strikeouts.

Norris finished the opener 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Clark, Barkley and Shields added two hits each. The win in Game 1 broke the school record for victories in a season for North Alabama.

In the second game, Cole kept the Union batters off balance the entire way, working five innings to record her second no-hitter of the season. The junior from Orange, Texas struck out four and walked four to improve to 22-1 on the season. Her 22 victories ties Carpenter's 2015 total for most in a single season at UNA.

At the plate, the Lions again used a fast start, scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning. Clark ignited the offense with a two-out, three-run bomb to right center.

After opening the second inning with three straight singles to load the bases, North Alabama added another run when a ground ball by Nelson scored Madeline Lee from third.

An RBI-single by Shields in the fourth inning made the score 5-0 before a four-run fifth inning ended the game via the mercy rule. Clark led of the frame with a solo homer, giving her three for the day and 12 for the season. An RBI-double by Lee made it 6-0 before a two-run walk-off homer by Mackenzie Roberts ended the game.

In the nightcap, Nelson, Clark, Barkley, Lee and Roberts each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

The same two teams will close out the series with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
