SOFTBALL HITS EIGHT HOME RUNS, SWEEPS CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn., – Records continued to fall Saturday as the University of North Alabama softball team swept Christian Brothers 12-3 and 7-0 on the road. The Lions (45-5) set single-season school records for home runs (68), RBI (333) and runs scored (373).

UNA also became the only team to win all 11 Gulf South Conference series this year, while the team's 29-3 record in league play is also a new GSC record for most conference victories.

The home run record was the first to fall. Five homers in the opener moved the Lions past the previous single-season record of 61 set during the 2014 campaign.

Brooklynn Clark homered twice while Anna Gayle Norris, Reagan Tittle and Madeline Lee each hit solo shots for UNA. Tittle gave the Lions the early lead with a two-run home run to centerfield in the top of the first inning.

After CBU cut the lead in half with a single run in the bottom of the first, it was Lee's turn to go long for the Lions. Her one-out blast to center increased North Alabama's lead to 3-1 in the top of the third.

A sacrifice fly by Lee and an RBI-single by Shelby Woodard made the score 5-1 in the top of the third inning before the Bucs added two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. UNA, however, took control with a five-run fourth inning.

Following two straight singles to put runners on base, Clark hit a three-run shot to dead center. Harlie Barkley followed with a single before Norris added a two-run blast of her own to make the score 10-3 and chase the CBU starter from the circle.

UNA wrapped up the scoring in the fifth inning when two more runs evoked the mercy rule. After a walk by Tittle, Clark hit her second homer of the day to account for the final score. The blast gave the senior from Seadrift, Texas 14 home runs one the year, one shy of a single-season record held by two former UNA players.

Hillary Carpenter (21-3) got the win in the circle for the Lions. The junior scattered four hits over five innings with a pair of strikeouts. Only one of the runs was earned. At the plate, Tittle and Courtney Shields each went 2-for-3. Clark, Barkley and Norris also added two hits each.

The second game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning, when the Lions sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs. Bailey Nelson started the rally with a one-out triple down the right line. Two batters later, Tittle homered to left center to give UNA a 3-0 lead.

Later in the inning, Clark singled to reach base and set up a two-run home run by Norris. Mackenzie Roberts finished the scoring in the frame with an RBI-single to make the score 6-0. A solo home run by Lee in the top of the seventh wrapped up the scoring on the day.

The runs scored and RBI records were both broken in the second game. The previous record of 367 runs was set during the 2006 season while the previous mark of 330 RBI was set in 2013.

Raven Cole recorded the complete-game shutout in the circle for North Alabama. It was the second straight shutout for the junior, who has now yielded only one earned run in the last 32 innings pitched. She struck out seven with a walk and four hits to improve to 23-1 on the season and set a new single-season school record for victories.

At the plate, Lee was 2-for-3 while Shields, Barkley and Norris each went 2-for-4. UNA now has 23 games with double-digit hit totals and has reached double figures in scoring 14 times. The Lions also have 19 mercy-rule wins.

North Alabama will close the regular season Sunday with a single game against CBU. First pitch is set for noon on the CBU campus in Memphis.
