MEMPHIS, Tenn.--- Trailing 5-2 in the eighth inning, the University of North Alabama used a 10-run rally to pull out a 12-5 win over Christian Brothers to complete a three-game sweep of the Gulf South Conference series with the Buccaneers.
UNA scored single runs in the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead but CBU rallied with a run in the third, three in the fifth and one in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.
The Lions then scored 10 runs in the top of the eighth to go on top 12-5 and held the Buccaneers scoreless over their last two at bats.
With the win UNA is now 24-20 overall and 15-15 in the GSC. CBU falls to 9-35 and 1-29.
UNA's run in the first inning came on a solo home run by
Kevin Hall. It was his eighth of the season.
Jess Smith reached on an error in the second and scored on a ground-out by
Kyle Crabtree.
In the eighth,
Kyle Hubbuch drew a leadoff walk,
Peyton Sockwell singled and
Mitchell Lovell walked to load the bases. Crabtree, David Elliott and
Dylan Calhoun each provided RBI singles to tie the game at 5-5 with the bases still loaded and no outs.
Heath Wood drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice and Elliott scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-5. After a walk to Hall reloaded the bases, Sockwell walked to force in another run and make it 8-5. A three-run double Lovell pushed the lead to 11-5 and the final run scored on a Crabtree RBI-single.
UNA starter Todd Gbibson pitched five and a third innings, allowing four runs on six hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.
Dylan Stewart (3-0) got the win, pitching three and two-thirds innings. He gave up one run on two hits while striking out eight.
North Alabama hosts Trevecca on Tuesday at 5 p.m. for a single game at Mike Lane Field. The Lions will then close their regular season at home with a three-game weekend series against Valdosta State.
